It’s about time… According to a recent study by the National Restaurant Association, 73 % of diners say they now try to choose healthier items when eating out. With climbing healthcare costs and a frightening obesity rate across the country (26% nationally), it’s about time that healthy quick serve restaurants (QSR) start growing their presence nationally.
Last year the organic grocery business grew at 9.5%, easily outpacing the growth of the regular grocery store segment. This growth illustrates an increase in demand for healthy, organic foods and suggests consumers are looking to create healthier lifestyles. This trend towards healthier foods will continue and should also drive high growth in the healthy quick serve restaurant segment. Clean ingredients are one of the 7 most popular trends in the QSR industry according to QSR Magazine. When asked about Chipotle’s unique position on healthy ingredients, Chipotle Spokesperson Chris Arnold summed it up by saying “no one else at our size and scale is doing it (using clean ingredients) in a meaningful way.” Chipotle currently ranks 18th in QSR/Fast Food market share rankings. In addition to Chipotle’s rapid expansion and a paradigm shift across the market, both local and regional tenants like Pita Jungle, Zoe’s Kitchen, My Fit Foods, True Food Kitchen, D’lish, and Saladworks have started to expand across the country resulting in consumer enthusiasm and strong sales in these new markets.
Timing is right for the expansion of healthy operators already existing in our market currently, but it’s also an ideal time for talented operators and healthy cool concepts like Lyfe Kitchen, Tender Greens, Evos, and Pizza Fusion to plant some healthy roots in Arizona and throughout the country… the nation is ready for healthy affordable food in a quick serve format.
